Radovljica is All the Buzz
Radovljica is a local medieval town near Lake Bled. It’s well-known for honey production and the only remaining preserved moat in Slovenia. After a 15-minute cab ride, I arrived at the colorful and quaint village surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
One of the best parts of the trip was Darko, the cab driver. He was brimming with love for his country. On the way over, he talked about the importance of bees to the Slovenia economy and how beekeeping is a deeply rooted part of the culture. In fact, Radovljica is the capital of beekeeping in Slovenia. There’s even a beekeeping museum in town.
As we pulled into town, Darko invited me to join him for a coffee, and I was happy that he did. We sipped our cappuccinos outside the local wine bar, Vinoteka Sodček, as I eagerly tuned into my crash course on Slovenia. Darko knew the bar owners, which wasn’t surprising since he was very friendly and outgoing and seemed like someone who would know all of the other locals.
During my short visit, I took a self-guided tour of the moat, the local church, and a quick bite at a restaurant with stunning views of the valley below that swept up towards the mountains. Afterwards, I boomeranged back to Vinoteka Sodček to indulge in wine tasting, soaking in details about wine regions and unique grape varieties through Slovenia.
My lingering impression is the tranquility, striking natural beauty, and how much the locals value nature and take great pleasure in the simple things in life.
